Our verdict

The Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 3000 needs nothing installed but its charging station and handles trees, open lawns and 80% slopes. The Navimow X430 is the pick for big open lawns, the LUBA mini 2 AWD for small shaded yards, and the Navimow i206 AWD for the lowest price.

A boundary wire is the oldest way to fence in a robot mower: you peg or bury a cable around every edge and flower bed, and repair it when it gets cut. Every mower on this list skips that. They set the boundary from a map you draw in the app, and find their way with LiDAR, satellite RTK or cameras. We ranked them on published specs, independent reviews and owner reports; see how we research.

What "wire-free" can still mean

Approach What you install Weak spot
Network RTK + cameras (Navimow) Nothing but the station Heavy tree cover
LiDAR + cameras (LUBA mini 2, Dreame A3, Ecovacs GOAT) Nothing but the station Hot weather on some LiDAR units (owner reports)
Cameras only (eufy E15) Nothing but the station Low light, bumps and damp grass
LiDAR + network RTK + cameras (LUBA 3 3000/5000) Nothing but the station Price
EPOS RTK with reference station (Husqvarna iQ) Station plus reference station with its own outlet Open sky needed

Our RTK vs LiDAR vs camera comparison explains each in plain terms.

Frequently asked questions

How does a robot mower work without a boundary wire?

It knows where it is from satellite positioning corrected by RTK, from a LiDAR scanner that maps the yard, from cameras, or from a mix. You walk or drive it around the lawn once in the app to set the boundary.

Do wire-free robot mowers need an antenna?

Some do. Husqvarna's iQ uses its own reference station. Navimow and Mammotion's RTK models use network RTK over the mobile network instead, and LiDAR-only models such as the LUBA mini 2 AWD and Dreame A3 AWD need no antenna at all.

Do wire-free mowers work under trees?

LiDAR models do. RTK-only models can lose accuracy under heavy canopy or next to tall walls, which is why many add cameras or LiDAR.
