Troubleshooting

Robot Mower Not Returning to Its Charging Station? 8 Fixes

Most docking failures come down to something in the way, a moved or badly placed station, dirty contacts or sensors, or a weak positioning signal. Work through these checks in order.

Quick fix

Clear the area in front of the station first and clean the charging contacts. Then check the station hasn't moved, update the firmware, and make sure the mower's camera or LiDAR and any RTK antenna have a clear view.

A robot mower that won't dock usually isn't broken. It is either blocked, confused about where the station is, or unable to "see" well enough to get there. These checks combine the makers' own advice from Navimow, Dreame, Worx and Mammotion, and they apply to every brand. Do them in order; the first three fix most cases.

Tip: Stop the mower and switch it off or lock it as your manual describes before you clean contacts or sensors, and keep your hands away from the blades.

1. Clear the path in front of the station

Obstructions are the most common cause, according to Navimow. Stones, twigs, toys, hoses, sprinklers and even a branch hanging over the approach make the mower stop at a safe distance and reroute. Navimow asks for about 6.5 ft of clear space in front of the station and 1.6 ft on each side; Dreame asks for an open, flat area within about 3 ft (1 m).

2. Clean the charging contacts

Grass, mud and grime on the charging strips stop the mower from charging and can confuse docking. Switch off the power supply, then clean the contacts with a dry brush or cloth. Navimow warns against alcohol, gasoline, acetone and other liquids. Dreame also suggests checking the station's base plate and the mower's wheels for mud.

3. Check the station hasn't moved

If the station was moved, even a little, the mower looks for it where the map says it should be. Drive the mower back to the station in the app; Dreame's mowers then update the station's location the next time they leave it. Otherwise, re-map the area.

4. Check the station's power

Make sure the station is plugged in and the power supply works. A mower can't find a station that is off.

5. Clean the camera, LiDAR and markers

Dirt on a camera lens or LiDAR window can make the mower "see" obstacles that aren't there and turn away, as Navimow explains. Wipe the lenses gently. On mowers that look for reflective markers on the station, such as Dreame's, keep those clean and unobstructed too.

6. Check the positioning signal

Mowers that use satellite RTK need a clear view of the sky near the station. Navimow advises keeping walls, dense trees and other structures more than about 6.6 ft from the station and, if you use an RTK antenna, placing it in the open with nothing blocking the sky. Mammotion's app shows the positioning status: only "Fix" allows automatic mowing, while "Float" or "Single" means the signal is too weak. If you have one, see our Mammotion positioning fix.

7. Update the firmware and restart

Navimow recommends updating the firmware with the mower on its station, the battery above 20% and no mowing scheduled in the next hour, then restarting the mower and the app. Docking bugs are often fixed in updates.

8. Check the battery level

If the battery runs flat on the way home, the mower simply stops. Worx's "Can't find charge station" message often means exactly that: carry the mower to the base and let it charge. If it keeps happening, shorten the mowing schedule or ask the maker about the battery.

Still not docking?

Contact the maker's support with photos of the station area and, if the app offers it, a log upload. If the mower is out of warranty and repairs cost too much, compare current models in our best robot lawn mowers guide.

Still not working?

If the fixes above don’t help and your mower is out of warranty, a repair can cost more than a replacement. Compare current models before you pay for parts.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my robot mower stop just short of the station?

Usually something blocks the approach (a hose, toy or overhanging plant), the ground in front of the station is uneven, or the charging contacts are dirty. Clear and level the approach and clean the contacts.

I moved my charging station. Why won't the mower find it?

The mower still looks for it where the map says it was. Drive it to the station with the app, or re-map; Dreame says the location updates automatically the next time the mower leaves the station.

What should I do if the battery ran out on the way back?

Carry or drive the mower to the station and let it charge, as Worx advises for the "Can't find charge station" message, then look for the cause with the checks below.

Robot Mower Not Charging? Find the Cause in 6 Checks

A robot mower that won't charge usually has no power at the station, a loose or damaged cable, dirty charging contacts, a badly placed station or a battery that is too hot or too cold. Here's how to tell which.
